Jon Sumrall is set to hire Phil Trautwein as the next offensive line coach of the Florida Gators, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.
Trautwein played at Florida from 2005-08, winning a pair of national championships and serving as a team captain for two seasons. He was an All-SEC selection at left tackle, earning first-team honors in 2008. Trautwein played four seasons in the NFL before beginning his coaching career.
He spent the last six seasons with the Penn State Nittany Lions as the offensive line coach. Trautwein started his coaching career with Boston College in 2013 as a graduate assistant, and then moved to Davidson in 2016 as a tight ends coach. He also served as special teams coordinator with Davidson in 2017. After that, he returned to Boston College as an offensive line coach.
Trautwein is considered a strong recruiter, which makes him a critical addition to Sumrall’s staff. Florida has struggled to secure commitments from elite offensive line recruits under its past two coaches. Trautwein should attract such talent, having developed 31 all-conference linemen and produced the second-most NFL draft picks on the offensive line (7) since 2020.
Penn State guard Olaivavega Ioane is a projected first-round selection in the upcoming NFL draft cycle.
