Norwegian Cruise Line Transforms Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas and the United States With a Landmark Island Makeover Focused on Travel and Tourism

A major evolution has been underway at Great Stirrup Cay, a private island destination in the Bahamas operated by Norwegian Cruise Line, as part of a long-term vision designed to elevate travel and tourism experiences for guests sailing primarily from the United States. The destination, long regarded as a highlight of Caribbean itineraries, has been reshaped through an island-wide refresh that introduces expansive leisure spaces, modern infrastructure, and family-friendly attractions. These changes have been positioned as the foundation of an immersive Escape to the Great Life experience, where relaxation, entertainment, and convenience are seamlessly combined.

With the opening of the expansive Great Life Lagoon and the exclusive Vibe Shore Club, a new standard has been established for private island offerings in the region. Enhanced access through a newly constructed pier, improved guest circulation via tram services, and thoughtfully designed play areas for younger visitors have collectively contributed to a more inclusive and efficient island visit. As cruise tourism demand continues to grow across the Bahamas and the United States, Great Stirrup Cay has been positioned as a flagship example of how private destinations can be reimagined to meet evolving traveler expectations while maintaining broad appeal across age groups and travel styles.

A Strategic Transformation of a Beloved Island Destination

A comprehensive transformation has been carried out across the 268-acre private island of Great Stirrup Cay, located in the Bahamas, as Norwegian Cruise Line continues to invest in destination-focused travel experiences. The redevelopment has been described as an island-wide refresh rather than a single expansion, with careful attention given to both infrastructure and guest amenities. This approach has ensured that the destination remains accessible, efficient, and visually striking while preserving its tropical character.

The enhancements have been designed to accommodate growing passenger volumes from cruise ships sailing from ports across the United States. With Norwegian Cruise Line estimating that approximately one million cruise guests will visit Great Stirrup Cay during 2026, capacity planning and guest flow management have been treated as essential priorities.

Great Life Lagoon Redefines Poolside Leisure

At the heart of the island transformation, Great Life Lagoon has been introduced as a defining feature. The 1.4-acre pool area has been developed to provide a central gathering space that blends relaxation with entertainment. The pool itself has been designed to exceed the size of two Olympic-sized pools placed side by side, creating an expansive aquatic environment rarely seen at private island destinations in the Bahamas.

Two swim-up bars have been integrated into the lagoon design, allowing refreshments to be enjoyed without leaving the water. Surrounding lounge areas have been arranged to accommodate a range of preferences, from shaded relaxation to sun-drenched seating. Private cabanas have also been added, offering guests a premium option for secluded comfort throughout the day.

Family-Focused Experiences Through Splash Harbor

Families traveling from the United States and beyond have been given dedicated spaces through the introduction of Splash Harbor. This new water play area for children has been designed to complement Great Life Lagoon while maintaining age-appropriate safety and entertainment features. Interactive elements and shallow water zones have been incorporated to ensure accessibility for younger guests.

By integrating Splash Harbor within the broader lagoon environment, a multigenerational experience has been created, allowing families to remain together while enjoying different activities. This design philosophy has reinforced the island position as a versatile destination within the Bahamas cruise market.

Adult Exclusivity at Vibe Shore Club

For adult travelers seeking a more tranquil atmosphere, Vibe Shore Club has been introduced as an extension of the Vibe Beach Club concept found aboard Norwegian Cruise Line ships. Access to this beachfront area has been limited to guests aged 18 and older, ensuring a calm and refined environment.

The space has been outfitted with a private bar and exclusive cabanas, all positioned to provide uninterrupted ocean views. Day passes have been made available for purchase, offering flexibility for guests who prefer premium experiences during their island visit. This addition has strengthened the destination appeal among couples and solo travelers sailing from the United States to the Bahamas.

Infrastructure Improvements Enhance Accessibility

One of the most significant developments at Great Stirrup Cay has been the completion of a two-ship pier, which officially opened on December 28, 2025. With this new dock in place, the long-standing requirement for tendering guests ashore has been eliminated. Direct docking has streamlined arrival and departure processes, reduced wait times, and improved overall guest satisfaction.

Norwegian Getaway has been recorded as the first ship to utilize the new pier. The infrastructure has also been designed to accommodate vessels operated by Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises, both brands within Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. This capability has expanded the island role as a shared premium destination within the broader cruise portfolio.

Expanded Guest Movement and Arrival Experience

To further enhance guest flow across the island, a welcome center and island-wide tram service have been introduced. These features have been implemented to reduce congestion and improve navigation, particularly during peak visitation days when multiple ships are docked simultaneously.

The welcome center has been positioned as a central orientation point, providing guests with clear pathways to key attractions such as Great Life Lagoon, Vibe Shore Club, and beach areas. This operational improvement has supported the island ability to handle increased visitor numbers from the United States while maintaining a relaxed vacation atmosphere.

Broad Deployment Across the Fleet

Access to Great Stirrup Cay has been expanded across a wide range of Norwegian Cruise Line vessels sailing from multiple United States homeports. Ships scheduled to call at the destination have included Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Prima from Port Canaveral, Norwegian Gem from Jacksonville, Norwegian Breakaway from New York, Norwegian Getaway from PortMiami, and Norwegian Viva from Galveston.

The newest ship in the fleet, Norwegian Luna, has been scheduled to enter service in March 2026 and will also feature calls to Great Stirrup Cay from PortMiami. This broad deployment has ensured consistent exposure to the enhanced destination across diverse itineraries serving the Bahamas.

Anticipation Builds for Great Tides Waterpark

While several major features have already been unveiled, further expansion has been planned with the upcoming opening of Great Tides Waterpark in summer 2026. The waterpark has been designed as a high-impact attraction centered around the 170-foot-tall Tidal Tower.

A total of 19 waterslides have been planned, including tube slides and racing slides intended to appeal to thrill-seekers of various age groups. Once completed, Great Tides Waterpark is expected to further solidify Great Stirrup Cay position as one of the most comprehensive private island destinations in the Bahamas cruise tourism sector.

A New Benchmark for Private Island Tourism

Through this extensive makeover, Great Stirrup Cay has been repositioned as a cornerstone of Norwegian Cruise Line Caribbean itineraries originating in the United States. The integration of large-scale leisure facilities, exclusive adult spaces, family attractions, and modern docking infrastructure has demonstrated a strategic commitment to destination development.

As cruise travel to the Bahamas continues to expand, the transformation of Great Stirrup Cay has been recognized as an example of how private islands can evolve beyond simple beach stops into fully realized tourism environments that cater to diverse traveler expectations.
