Thousands of travelers have been left stranded across Europe as Germany, Russia, Turkey, Switzerland, and Finland grapple with severe disruptions. Airlines such as Air France, Finnair, Aeroflot, Pegasus, and KLM have faced widespread cancellations and delays affecting over 210 flights and 3,142 delayed across major airports. This has caused chaos at hubs in Hamburg, Moscow, Istanbul, Zurich, Helsinki, and others. The travel disruptions are mainly attributed to severe weather conditions, including heavy winds and snowstorms, which have forced airlines to ground flights. Passengers are experiencing significant delays, with some unable to board their flights for hours.

For travelers in cities like Hamburg and Moscow, the situation remains especially dire, with no clear end in sight. As the storm moves across Europe, these disruptions are likely to continue, further affecting international and domestic travel.

Major Airports Affected by Disruptions

The flight disruptions have been particularly severe at some of Europe’s busiest airports. Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) in the Netherlands recorded 25 cancelled flights and 341 delays, making it one of the most impacted hubs. Meanwhile, major international airports like Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Frankfurt International (FRA) also experienced notable disruptions, with 21 and 7 cancellations respectively, and 293 and 385 delays.

Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International (SAW) in Turkey saw 34 cancellations, coupled with 173 delays. Other airports such as Zurich (ZRH) and Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL) were also affected, experiencing 22 and 20 cancellations, with delays of 267 and 91, respectively. The storm’s effects rippled across Europe, with major airports from the Czech Republic to Moscow also suffering cancellations. Authorities in the UK, France, and Germany advised people to stay indoors, as strong gusts of wind, reaching up to 216 km/h (134 mph), brought operations to a halt.

Power Outages and Transportation Disruptions

The storm’s impact was also felt on the ground. In France, 320,000 homes were left without power, especially in northern Normandy, as trees were uprooted by the ferocious winds. While some power was restored, nearly 100,000 homes remained without electricity into the weekend.

As the storm swept eastward, Goretti’s winds caused flooding, closed roads and ports, and severely disrupted local infrastructure. In northern Germany, Storm Elli brought snow and high winds, causing severe disruptions to rail services, particularly in Hamburg and Bremen. Deutsche Bahn confirmed that long-distance trains between cities like Hamburg, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam were cancelled. Some roads were also paralysed, including those in the Frankfurt region, as snow accumulations reached up to 15 cm (6 inches).

Fatalities and Injuries from the Storm

Tragically, the storm has claimed over 13 lives across Europe due to weather-related accidents. In Bavaria, southern Germany, a man died after crashing his car into a tree, while a second fatality occurred when a road accident, linked to the severe weather conditions, took place on Friday morning. In Cornwall, UK, the storm claimed another life after a tree fell onto a caravan, tragically killing a man inside.

Authorities warned of continued risks across affected areas, including black ice in northern England and Scotland, where further disruption to travel is expected. Several public services, including schools in northern France, were closed due to the hazardous weather conditions.

Impacted Airlines and Routes

Several airlines operating across Europe have also been heavily affected by these travel disruptions. Pegasus Airlines, based in Turkey, recorded the highest number of cancellations at 34, with 139 delayed flights. Air France, based in France, and Finnair from Finland also saw considerable delays and cancellations, affecting their routes from Paris, Helsinki, and other key cities.

Lufthansa, Germany’s flagship airline, reported just 1 cancelled flight but faced a high number of delays, amounting to 201. Other airlines, including KLM (Netherlands) and Swiss (Switzerland), also had to deal with significant disruptions, with 17 and 13 cancellations, respectively. Pegasus Airlines and Wizz Air Malta (operating in Malta) were particularly hard-hit, as they dealt with a combination of delayed and cancelled flights on high-demand routes across Europe.

Affected Passengers: What Can They Do Now?

For travelers facing disruptions, the first step is to check with their airline for the latest updates on their flights. Many airlines, including Air France, KLM, and Finnair, are providing assistance in the form of rebooking options or offering compensation for significantly delayed flights. Passengers whose flights have been cancelled should be prepared to explore alternative routes or consider nearby airports if feasible.

It is advisable for passengers to keep an eye on their emails and mobile apps for notifications of any further changes. If waiting at an airport for extended periods, be sure to visit customer service desks to inquire about available support, including meal vouchers or temporary accommodations. For those traveling with children, some airports have dedicated services and play areas that can make long waiting times more manageable.

What Does This Mean for European Travel?

With huge number of cancelled flights and numerous rail services suspended across Europe, this storm has become one of the most disruptive weather events in recent memory. As Goretti and Elli continue to bring dangerous conditions, it remains vital for passengers to stay updated and prepared for further disruptions. In total, 210 cancellations and 3,142 delays across Europe underline the importance of preparation and flexibility in the face of unexpected disruptions. Whether you are departing from Amsterdam, Istanbul, Paris, or Helsinki, it is essential to plan accordingly and stay informed throughout your journey.
