Sustainable Aviation Fuel Gains Global Momentum as Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths Takes Helm of SAF Pathfinder Initiative, What You Need to Know

In a crucial step forward in the aviation industry’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) has gained significant traction with the appointment of Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, as the CEO Champion of the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) SAF Pathfinder Initiative. This appointment marks a key moment in the global push for decarbonisation, with Griffiths bringing his vast industry experience to lead the effort to scale SAF adoption worldwide.

Paul Griffiths at the Forefront of SAF Adoption

As the aviation sector continues to face increasing pressure to tackle its climate impact, SAF is recognised as one of the most viable near-term solutions to reduce flight emissions. SAF has the potential to cut emissions by up to 80%, offering a clear pathway for the aviation industry to meet its ambitious net-zero goals. However, despite its potential, SAF currently accounts for less than 1% of the global jet fuel supply. This gap underscores the need for concerted action to accelerate its production and adoption, which Griffiths will now champion through the SMI’s SAF Pathfinder Initiative.

The SAF Pathfinder Initiative, which Griffiths now leads, unites key stakeholders from across the aviation, energy, finance and policy sectors. Its primary focus is on mobilising investment, driving demand and advocating for harmonised global policies that support the production and adoption of SAF. Additionally, the initiative aims to facilitate the necessary infrastructure upgrades and foster collaboration across the supply chain to overcome the production and cost barriers that have hindered SAF’s widespread use.

Dubai Airports’ Proven Commitment to Sustainability

Paul Griffiths’ leadership in this initiative is backed by his strong track record in sustainability. Under his guidance, Dubai Airports has already made significant strides in reducing its environmental impact. The airport operator has achieved Level 4 “Transformation” accreditation from Airports Council International (ACI), a distinction that places Dubai Airports among the top 5% of airports globally for its sustainability efforts. This recognition highlights the effectiveness of Griffiths’ leadership in promoting sustainability and fostering collaborations with partners.

Dubai Airports has also been at the forefront of several initiatives to reduce emissions, including the implementation of biodiesel-powered ground fleets and the development of green infrastructure projects at both Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC). These initiatives align with the broader goals of the SAF Pathfinder Initiative, reinforcing Griffiths’ commitment to driving decarbonisation within the aviation sector.

Accelerating Global SAF Adoption

With the aviation industry’s 2050 net-zero target approaching, the need to scale up SAF production and usage has never been more urgent. Griffiths, alongside the SMI, is focused on creating the necessary conditions for SAF to play a central role in decarbonising aviation. The SAF Pathfinder Initiative will seek to unlock investment, overcome regulatory barriers and build a strong global network of stakeholders committed to SAF adoption.

Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, CEO of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, emphasised the importance of SAF as a catalyst for decarbonisation not only within aviation but also for driving the global expansion of sustainable technologies and investments. With Griffiths’ proven leadership in the sustainability space, the SMI is poised to make significant strides in accelerating SAF adoption and driving the industry closer to a sustainable future.

As the global aviation sector looks ahead, the appointment of Paul Griffiths to lead the SAF Pathfinder Initiative signals a renewed commitment to sustainable aviation practices. Under his guidance, SAF is set to become a cornerstone of the aviation industry’s journey toward a low-carbon future, contributing to the global fight against climate change while helping to ensure the continued growth and success of the aviation sector.
