Intrepid Travel Unveils Groundbreaking Support For Indigenous Tourism Across Canada: Here’s What You Need To Know

Intrepid Travel, the largest adventure travel company, provides substantial support for Indigenous tourism development in Canadian territories. The company signed a landmark partnership with the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) on 26th January, 2026 which will strengthen its efforts to promote Indigenous culture throughout its Canadian tour operations. The pledge, worth 500,000 USD (267,000 pound), is aimed at enhancing Indigenous-led experiences in Canada, ensuring that these communities benefit economically and culturally from the growing global tourism sector.

The commitment to supporting Indigenous tourism comes as Intrepid Travel gears up to make a remarkable shift in its Canadian tour offerings. By the end of 2026, the company plans to ensure that 75 percent of its tours in Canada include at least one Indigenous-led experience. This initiative is part of Intrepid’s broader vision to expand these experiences across all its Canadian tours over the long term.

Empowering Indigenous Communities and Enhancing Travel Experiences

The demand for Indigenous-led tourism is higher than ever, but challenges remain. Limited funding and infrastructure have hindered the ability of Indigenous businesses to fully harness the potential of the tourism industry. Keith Henry, CEO and President of ITAC, emphasised that partnerships like the one with Intrepid Travel are essential to overcoming these barriers. According to Henry, such partnerships create tangible opportunities for Indigenous communities, offering direct economic and cultural benefits. They also support ITAC’s vision of making Canada a world leader in Indigenous tourism by 2030.

Christian Wolters, president of Intrepid Travel Canada, also shared his thoughts on the expansion: For more than 30 years, Intrepid Travel has used small-group adventures to empower communities around the world. Now, as it embarks on our biggest expansion in Canada excited to help travellers connect more deeply with Indigenous cultures here and ensure tourism creates meaningful benefits for communities.

Through this partnership, Intrepid Travel and ITAC have divided the funding into two main areas: development and promotion. The first part of the investment will be directed towards supporting ITAC in developing Indigenous-led tourism businesses across Canada. The second part will be dedicated to advertising and media promotion to raise awareness about these experiences globally.

The Role of Sustainable Tourism in Promoting Indigenous Cultures

Sustainable tourism has become an integral part of the global travel landscape. For companies like Intrepid Travel, it’s about more than just offering tours; it’s about making a positive impact on the communities they engage with. By incorporating Indigenous experiences into their offerings, Intrepid Travel is taking significant steps towards responsible tourism in Canada.

The introduction of these new experiences will provide travellers with the chance to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Indigenous communities. From guided tours by Indigenous peoples to hands-on workshops and learning experiences, these initiatives allow visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Canada’s diverse cultural landscapes.

Other US Destinations Focusing on Indigenous Tourism

While Canada has made significant strides in enhancing Indigenous tourism, the United States is also home to several regions that have embraced this cause. Here are some examples:

  • Navajo Nation, Arizona: As one of the largest Indigenous nations in North America, the Navajo Nation offers visitors a chance to explore breathtaking landscapes, such as Monument Valley, while learning about Navajo history and culture through authentic tours, art, and storytelling.
  • Alaska Native Villages: Alaska is known for its Indigenous cultures, and many communities have created immersive tourism experiences. Visitors can learn about traditional subsistence living, Indigenous art, and local wildlife conservation efforts.
  • South Dakota’s Lakota Culture: South Dakota, home to the Lakota Sioux, offers cultural tours that explore sacred sites, such as the Badlands and Mount Rushmore, while offering insights into Lakota spirituality and history.
  • California’s Yurok Tribe: Located on the northern coast of California, the Yurok Tribe offers visitors the chance to explore lush forests, rivers, and beaches while learning about their conservation efforts and deep connection to the land.

These regions in the United States are also focusing on creating sustainable and community-led tourism experiences, much like Intrepid’s approach in Canada. By supporting Indigenous businesses and communities, they are providing travellers with opportunities to learn, connect, and contribute to preserving cultural heritage.

A New Era for Indigenous Tourism

As the largest adventure travel company in the world, Intrepid Travel’s investment in Indigenous tourism signals a new era for the sector. By increasing the number of Indigenous-led experiences across its Canadian tours, the company is setting a positive example for the travel industry. This partnership with ITAC will not only provide meaningful opportunities for Indigenous communities but also offer travellers a chance to connect more deeply with Canada’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.

The financial commitment and strategic focus on developing Indigenous tourism businesses will help ensure that the benefits of tourism are shared by all. As the year progresses, Intrepid Travel shows itself to be the pioneer of responsible tourism which emphasizes community development and its successful methods will motivate others to adopt similar practices.
