The Dorsey brothers are ready to go when it comes to football for Phillis Wheatley High School.
“It’s good, fun, a lot of energy when we are all together,” Phillis Wheatley HS senior Larry Dorsey said.
What makes the family unique is that there are three pairs of brothers on the team, all cousins, six players in all.
“If I don’t make a play, I know one of my other family members will come, you know, and clean up the play for me,” Vincent Dorsey said.
“I call them by their first names,” Wheatley HS head coach Deandre Cooper said. “If I called out Dorsey, I might look up, and all five or six of them are right in front of me.”
On offense, you can find brothers Peter and Maurice blocking for cousins Vincent and Larry.
“It’s like having another brother,” junior Peter Dorsey said. “Backyard football, it just feels the same.”
“We’ve known each other for a long time; since we were young, we’ve been around each other,” freshman Maurice Dorsey said.
On defense, it’s not uncommon to have all six Dorseys on the field at the same time.
“I know I can trust them,” senior Cameron Dorsey said. “I can go to them when I need any help or when I need to study film, or I need to remember the plays. I know I can always go to them, as they are the best for me.”
“I’ve been playing with them for a long time,” Sophomore Kendrick Dorse added.
“It’s my first time really being on the team with a lot of family members, so it feels different; it feels good just to know every one of my cousins is making a play every game,” Kendrick’s brother Vincent said.
To the Dorseys, team success matters most. They try not to let family disagreements get in the way of helping the team win or the bond they share.
“We’ll have an argument here and there because we are family; we’ve known each other for a long time,” Peter Dorsey said. “It’ll all come down to the end; we love each other.”
