As part of an international expansion strategy, AirAsia X, a long-haul subsidiary of Malaysia’s AirAsia, has unveiled an inaugural trip connecting Kuala Lumpur to Bahrain and London. They plan to open this new route in June, and it adds a new hub for the airline in the Middle East. With this expansion, AirAsia X will be utilizing Bahrain’s hub to facilitate new travel options for customers to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
This new route will create connections to AirAsia X’s services at London’s Gatwick Airport and will also create connections to the airline’s Airbus A330 operations. For over a decade, the airline’s long-haul routes to Gatwick and Stansted airports in London were suspended because of the airline’s retirement of A340 aircraft. With this new route, the airline will be operating flights from London to Kuala Lumpur, and will be offering services to Bahrain, and London, Gatwick, from Kuala Lumpur, direct.
Bahrain, New Middle East AirAsia X Hub
The initial hope is that the new AirAsia X hub in Bahrain will provide the ability to expand the airline’s reach throughout the Middle East, offering new and potentially unrivaled low-cost travel opportunities to the region. More specifically, the opportunity to utilize the new Bahrain hub will allow AirAsia X to expand its long-haul travel options, making travel to and from the Middle East, Europe, and Asia easier and more flexible.
The new route from Kuala Lumpur to Bahrain and onward to London will further support and demonstrate AirAsia X’s growth potential in the Middle East. Bahrain is an important and growing hub for regional aviation, and its importance will continue to grow, especially for AirAsia X as it will provide the opportunity to cater to both the business and leisure travel needs of its customers.
The Expansion of AirAsia X’s Long-Haul Flights
AirAsia X is continuing its expansion of long-haul flights for the improvement of the airline’s global network. In November, the airline started servicing flights from Kuala Lumpur to Istanbul, gaining a foothold in the European market. Now, with the Kuala Lumpur-Bahrain-London route, AirAsia X is able to service the European as well as the Middle Eastern markets.
The airline is continuing to refine its operations in order to accommodate the demands of the market, and with the new route to London, they will be able to service the needs for travel from Southeast Asia to Europe. Furthermore, the new route will provide passengers with more travel options to connect through Bahrain.
Building a Stronger Fleet for Expansion
The airline has also announced some new routes and is continuing to build and refine the fleet to support the network expansion. The airline is looking to restructure approximately $600 million in debt, as this is crucial to the airline expanding its network.
AirAsia X’s parent company, Capital A, has just finalized the purchase of short-haul aviation, unifying all of its airlines into one brand. This merger will enable AirAsia X to enhance network services and simplify operational practices.
Additionally, AirAsia has been negotiating with Airbus to acquire up to 150 of its newest planes, including the A220 jets. This purchase would help AirAsia open more routes and expand its network.
With these adaptable long-haul services, AirAsia will be able to meet the growing demand for affordable travel.
Continuously Expanding AirAsia X
Opening the route to Kuala Lumpur, Bahrain, and London is just one of the many moves AirAsia X is making to establish itself as a vital player in the global aviation sector. Expanding its fleet and operations and developing new hubs will establish AirAsia X as a key connector between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
While securing their financial future and bolstering their fleet, the airline has committed to ensuring its customers access to high-quality, cost-efficient, and reliable travel options. New routes like the Kuala Lumpur-Bahrain-London route will open a new horizon to AirAsia X and address the ever-increasing demands of the market.
Adding the new route to their fleet will strengthen AirAsia X’s goal of becoming the most sought-after airline for budget long-haul travel. They will be able to service customers’ travel needs across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
