Today marks 92 days until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2026 regular season. New Orleans will hit the road for their season opener, traveling to play the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Sept. 13. Wearing No. 92 last season and heading towards training camp for the Saints is defensive tackle Davon Godchaux.
Arriving in a trade last offseason, Godchaux will face some stiff competition on the interior defensive line this year. He is the the 14th player to suit up in No. 92 with New Orleans. As our countdown to kickoff series continues, we take a look through all of them here.
Saints History of No. 92

James Haynes was the first to put on a 92 for New Orleans, doing so for six seasons. On a defense that had the iconic Dome Patrol, Haynes didn’t get a lot of snaps, though he did start all 16 contests of the 1986 season. During his time with the Saints, Haynes had 4 sacks and an interception in mostly backup duty. His 61 games are the second most of the New Orleans players that wore the number 92 uniform.
A fourth-round choice by the Saints in the 1990 NFL Draft, DeMond Winston was the first player drafted by the team to wear 92. Like Haynes, he didn’t get much defensive time during four years behind the Dome Patrol. Winston was still around for 50 games, but had no sacks and 18 total tackles in mostly special teams duty.
Darren Mickell arrived to New Orleans after a trade with Kansas City in 1996. Mickell would play 24 games with the Saints over the next two seasons, gathering 6.5 sacks. Troy Wilson was with the Saints for two seasons, wearing No. 79 in 1998 before switching to 92 the next year. That season, he had 5.5 sacks over his 16 games played. Martin Chase played three seasons in the No. 92, primarily on special teams for 38 games. Henry Ford was with New Orleans for four games in 2003, capping off a 10-year career that had previously been spent with the Oilers and Titans.
Tony Bryant joined the Saints in 2004 from the Oakland Raiders. Bryant was with New Orleans for two years, recording 6 sacks over 32 games. Remi Ayodele came on board in 2008 and was with the Saints for 37 contests over three years. His production was modest, 2.5 sacks and 6 tackles for loss, but he had a fumble return for a touchdown and was a part of the defensive line rotation through the Super Bowl XLIV title year.
Big Shaun Rogers was added in 2011 by New Orleans. Rogers was a Saint for only one year and wasn’t the same Pro Bowl presence he was with the Lions and Browns for 10 seasons, but was a solid addition to the run defense for his 16 games. An equally large presence took over No. 92 when the Saints drafted John Jenkins in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Jenkins would be with New Orleans for four years and 49 games. He had just 1.5 sacks and 6 tackles for loss, but was a capable run defender in the middle. John Hughes was added in 2017 in what was the final year of his six-year career, but made little impact over his eight games.
New Orleans traded multiple picks to move up in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. With that 14th overall choice, they’d select defensive end Marcus Davenport out of UTSA. Davenport is the highest drafted player by the Saints to wear No. 92. His 63 games with New Orleans over five years also give him the longest tenure of anyone to wear the jersey. Beyond that, the mention of Davenport often invokes anger among the team’s fan base. He certainly flashed terrific talents, but never consistently enough. Davenport had 21.5 sacks, 60 QB hits, and 25 tackles for loss as a Saint. In addition to the low production he also couldn’t be counted on to stay in the lineup, missing 22 games over those six seasons in New Orleans.
Tanoh Kpassagnon came to the Saints in 2021. After two seasons in No. 90, he switched to 92 in 2023 after Davenport’s free agent departure. Kpassagnon was with New Orleans for two more seasons after that, wearing 92 for 20 games. Over those last two campaigns he had 3.5 sacks with 10 QB hits.
Davon Godchaux arrived in a trade with New England last offseason. Godchaux was expected to bolster the middle against the run, but was ineffective much of the year. As a result, the Saints brought in plenty of defensive tackle competition this offseason. For Godchaux to hold on to his spot for a second year, he’ll likely have to step up his game significantly in training camp.
