On Monday, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales stated that his starters would not be suiting up for the Hall of Fame Game. Apparently, and perhaps surprisingly, inside linebacker Trevin Wallace is not included in that group.
Per Joe Person of The Athletic, Wallace is in uniform for tonight’s preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals.
Here’s what Canales told reporters at the beginning of the week:
“There are some competition battles for starting positions, where guys will have an opportunity to play a little bit. Some of the guys we’re expecting to be out there right off the bat, I think we won’t play those guys in this game.”
That would likely mean that Wallace, the projected starter alongside free-agent addition Devin Lloyd, does not have that spot locked down as of yet. And given the underwhelming results of Wallace’s first two pro campaigns, perhaps Canales and the staff aren’t wrong.
Wallace has had difficulties both in coverage and against the run. He also had both seasons cut short due to shoulder injuries.
Other inside linebackers on the roster include Claudin Cherelus, Bam Martin-Scott, Mapalo Mwansa, Maema Njongmeta and Jackson Kuwatch.
