For a young motorsport competitor, a karting event is about much more than achieving the quickest lap time. Across two days of practice sessions, qualifying rounds and intense racing action, young participants from Hong Kong had the opportunity to transform their training into real competition experience. The championship is divided into two classes. The Cadet category welcomes drivers aged between 8 and 12 years old competing with 60cc karts, while the Junior category is designed for racers aged 12 to 17 using 125cc karts. Both categories compete on the approximately 1.2-kilometre circuit featuring 14 corners, creating a demanding environment where young drivers can develop their skills.

The championship weekend started with practice sessions, giving drivers valuable time to understand the circuit layout, improve braking techniques, adjust racing lines and maximise corner-exit performance. Throughout the two-day competition, drivers experienced close racing situations, including side-by-side battles through corners, defensive driving and carefully planned overtaking attempts. These moments provided lessons that cannot be fully recreated during individual practice sessions.
Handling pressure, understanding race traffic and making split-second choices are key elements of developing authentic race craft. These experiences help young drivers build the foundation needed to improve, progress and eventually take on higher levels of motorsport competition.
One Make Karting format puts young drivers at the centre of competition
The HK Youth Karting Championship follows a One Make Karting and Arrive & Drive format, ensuring that all competitors use equipment prepared to a consistent specification. Race karts, competition components and designated tyres are standardised, reducing the performance differences that can come from different machinery setups.
This approach shifts the focus towards the abilities of each driver rather than equipment advantages. Consistency, technical skills, race judgement and strategic thinking become the main factors that influence performance on the circuit.
For young racers entering competitive motorsport, the format provides exposure to a complete professional-style race weekend. Drivers experience every stage of competition, including practice preparation, qualifying pressure, race starts, wheel-to-wheel battles and post-race evaluation.

CHKMC Head Coach Chester Lam said, “Training can teach a driver racing lines, braking points and kart control, but a real race involves other drivers, starts, attack and defense, and pressure. It is a completely different situation.”
