Drew Gilbert hits two doubles against Chase Burns

San Francisco (53-78) and Cincinnati (62-70) opened a three-game National League series on Monday. The Giants won the series opener, 5-0, at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California.

Two former Vols started in Game 1.

Chase Burns (14-3) started for the Reds and pitched 3.2 innings. He recorded five strikeouts and 64 pitches, including 40 strikes, against 19 batters. The right-handed pitcher allowed nine hits (one home run), five runs (five earned) and one walk.

Drew Gilbert started in center field and was the Giants’ leadoff batter. He went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.

Gilbert hit two doubles against Burns. He hit a ground rule double in the first inning and a double to left field in the second inning.

Burns played at Tennessee from 2022-23 before transferring to Wake Forest in 2024. He was selected No. 2 overall in the first round of the MLB draft in 2024 by Cincinnati.

Gilbert played for the Vols from 2020-22. He was selected by Houston in the first round (No. 28 overall) of the 2022 MLB draft.
