May 5—SIOUX FALLS — On the strength of four top-five individuals, the Mitchell High School girls golf team claimed the team title at a quadrangular on Tuesday at Bakker Crossing Golf Course.
Mitchell shot a team total of 318 strokes, coming in 20 strokes ahead of runner-up Yankton (338), with host Sioux Falls Lincoln (352) in third place and Sioux Falls Jefferson (364) in fourth.
Anna Eliason led the Kernels as the individual runner-up, posting a score of 7-over-par 78 strokes on Bakker Crossing’s par-71 layout. MHS teammates Mia Larson (79), Londyn Hajek (80) and Maddie Childs (81) slotted into third through fifth place, respectively, and rounded out the team score. Brynlee Sabers (84) tied for eighth, and Elliot Smith (96) was also on the course for Mitchell.
Yankton’s Ellia Homstad earned individual medalist honors, shooting a 4-over 75 to finish three shots ahead of Eliason at the top of the leaderboard.
Tuesday marked the second of four scheduled varsity events for the MHS girls golf program this week. On Monday, the Kernels finished third at the Sioux Falls Invitational, played at Willow Run Golf Course.
The Kernels’ busy schedule continues on Thursday with the Huron Invitational at Broadland Creek Golf Course and concludes Friday with the Yankton Invitational at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club.
