Peru announced the visa waiver policy for eligible travelers from 101 countries as of October 2026, including South Africa, Germany, United States and Others. Peru is among the most compelling destinations in South America that offer ancient history, striking landscapes, and remarkable natural beauty. This country can provide tourists with unforgettable cultural and wildlife-related experiences due to its biodiversity and unique locations. The Peruvian wild habitat ranges from the Andes Mountains to the Amazon Rainforest, while its Pacific coastline provides tourists with beautiful beaches. With a huge variety of ecosystems, Peru becomes an excellent destination for nature lovers and outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, surfing, kayaking, and paragliding. Ancient Peru is also found in more than 5000 archaeological sites in the country, including the famous Machu Picchu.

Peru Tourism 2026: International Arrivals Reach 2.26 Million

Peru welcomed approximately 2.26 million international tourists between January and August 2026, a slight 0.4% decline from 2.27 million during the same period in 2025, reaching nearly 76% of pre-pandemic levels. July recorded the highest arrivals with 327,936 visitors, followed by August with 303,417. Chile remained the largest source market with 457,224 tourists, followed by the United States with 432,259. Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport continued as the country’s main international gateway, while Machu Picchu and the Magic Water Circuit remained major tourism attractions. Peru’s rich cultural heritage, spectacular landscapes and diverse natural attractions continue to support its appeal as a leading South American travel destination.

Peru Tourism Expected to Contribute 3.7% to GDP in 2026

Peru’s tourism industry is projected to contribute 3.7% to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2026, approaching the pre-pandemic level of 3.9% recorded in 2019. According to projections attributed to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR), international tourism revenue could reach US$5.4 billion, exceeding the US$4.8 billion generated in 2019. The country also expects to attract approximately 4 million international tourists during 2026, compared with 4.5 million before the pandemic. With 2.26 million international visitors recorded between January and August, Peru’s tourism recovery increasingly depends on higher visitor spending and longer stays rather than arrival numbers alone. Meanwhile, the OECD’s estimate of approximately 2.8% reflects a different, narrower measure of tourism’s direct GDP contribution.

TTW Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Anup Kumar Keshan, Comments:“Peru’s growing international tourism appeal, supported by visa-free access for eligible travellers from 101 countries and territories as of October 2026, including South Africa, Germany and the United States, highlights how easier entry can strengthen global tourism connections. Greater travel accessibility encourages visitors to discover Peru’s iconic Machu Picchu, ancient Inca heritage, breathtaking Andes Mountains and biodiverse Amazon rainforest. With approximately 2.26 million international tourists recorded between January and August 2026, Peru continues to strengthen its position as a leading South American destination. Improved international connectivity can create new opportunities for hotels, tourism operators, local businesses and communities while supporting cultural tourism, adventure travel and sustainable growth. As Peru expands its tourism appeal, easier entry can encourage longer stays, increase visitor spending and strengthen the country’s presence in the global tourism market.”
