TUI River Cruises is preparing for its largest summer season yet in 2028, with two purpose-built ships, an exciting expansion onto France’s Seine and a wider selection of European river holidays. The ambitious programme will introduce TUI Zora and TUI Velara, alongside the arrival of TUI Elara on the Seine, opening new opportunities for travellers to explore some of Europe’s most celebrated cities, historic towns and scenic waterways. With a fleet of 10 ships, 43 itineraries and journeys lasting between three and 14 nights, the summer 2028 collection represents a major expansion of the company’s river cruise offering. Bookings open on 15 October 2026, with departures scheduled from March through October 2028.

The expansion reflects TUI River Cruises’ growing emphasis on destination-led holidays, greater onboard comfort and more flexible travel experiences. The programme combines established routes along the Rhine, Moselle and Danube with additional opportunities to explore northern France, Portugal and other popular European waterways. It also marks an important step in the company’s longer-term fleet development, with new vessels designed to meet changing passenger expectations while accommodating future developments in marine fuel technology.

TUI River Cruises Sets the Stage for Its Largest Summer Programme

The summer 2028 programme marks a significant new chapter for TUI River Cruises as the company broadens its fleet and strengthens its presence across Europe’s river cruise market. With a planned capacity increase of 26%, the operator is creating additional opportunities for travellers to experience river holidays while expanding the number of destinations available through its network.

The season will feature 10 river cruise vessels operating 43 itineraries, offering a combination of short escapes and extended journeys. Holidaymakers will be able to explore destinations across the Rhine, Moselle, Danube, Dutch and Belgian waterways, Douro, Nile and Seine.

Two Purpose-Built Ships Bring a New Generation of River Cruising

At the centre of the expansion are TUI Zora and TUI Velara, two newly constructed vessels developed specifically for TUI River Cruises and tailored to the preferences of British holidaymakers. Both ships represent a move towards a more contemporary river cruise experience, blending modern interiors with cultural influences from the destinations visited.

Each vessel will accommodate 188 passengers across 94 cabins, creating an intimate environment while offering a broad choice of accommodation and social spaces. Full Board Plus will be included as the standard dining package, with passengers able to upgrade to an All Inclusive arrangement for additional convenience.

TUI Zora Prepares to Begin Rhine Voyages in May 2028

TUI Zora will make its inaugural journey along the Rhine on 7 May 2028, introducing travellers to one of Europe’s best-known river cruise regions. Its name, associated with dawn and fresh beginnings, reflects the company’s plans to establish a new standard for its next generation of river vessels.

The Rhine offers a combination of historic settlements, vineyard-covered hillsides, traditional architecture and scenic river landscapes. These features provide the setting for a journey built around cultural exploration and comfortable onboard experiences.

The ship will introduce modern accommodation, expanded dining choices and interiors inspired by the character of the river.

TUI Velara Expands Danube Cruising With an August 2028 Debut

The second new vessel, TUI Velara, is scheduled to begin operations on the Danube on 14 August 2028, further strengthening the company’s position along one of Europe’s most culturally significant waterways.

Its name is associated with brightness and the idea of shining, reflecting the design philosophy behind the new ship. Like TUI Zora, it will accommodate 188 passengers and offer spacious shared areas, upgraded accommodation choices and multiple dining venues.

The Danube’s appeal lies in its combination of historic capitals, distinctive regional traditions and varied scenery, making it a suitable setting for the company’s destination-focused approach.

Cultural Mosaic Design Brings European Destinations Onboard

A defining feature of the two new ships is the introduction of Cultural Mosaic, a design concept intended to connect the onboard environment more closely with the places passengers explore.

TUI River Cruises developed the concept using feedback gathered from existing customers and people considering river cruising for the first time. Its research identified the destination itself as the strongest motivation behind many bookings.

That finding influenced the ships’ interior design, dining spaces and shared facilities. Elements of local architecture, culinary traditions, regional wines and folklore will help create surroundings that reflect the character of the Rhine, Moselle and Danube.

Spacious Balcony Suites Introduce Greater Onboard Comfort

Accommodation is another major focus of the new ships, with TUI River Cruises planning a wider range of cabin categories to suit different travel preferences.

A notable addition is the introduction of Balcony Suites measuring up to 25 square metres. These will be the largest suites within the operator’s European river cruise fleet, providing additional space for passengers seeking a more comfortable journey.

The accommodation offering will sit alongside improved public areas, additional bars and restaurants, and carefully planned interiors. Together, these features aim to create a more flexible experience that allows passengers to enjoy both destination exploration and time relaxing onboard.

New Ships Are Designed With Future Fuel Developments in Mind

Beyond accommodation and design improvements, TUI Zora and TUI Velara have been developed with future marine fuel technology in mind.

Both ships have been designed and built with foundations intended to support the next generation of alternative fuels, particularly methanol. This represents an important element of the company’s long-term fleet planning as the river cruise industry explores alternatives to conventional marine fuels.

The vessels’ design does not mean they will operate on methanol from their inaugural sailings. Rather, the approach is intended to provide a basis for future technological adaptation as suitable fuel systems and supporting infrastructure become available.

France’s Seine Becomes a Major New Destination for TUI River Cruises

One of the most significant changes for summer 2028 is the introduction of the Seine to the company’s European river cruise portfolio.

From 20 March 2028, the adults-only TUI Elara will operate four-, seven- and 10-night journeys through northern France, connecting the cultural attractions of Paris with historic towns and landscapes across Normandy.

The Seine was identified among the five most desired rivers in TUI River Cruises’ customer research, highlighting strong interest in holidays that combine famous city landmarks with smaller communities and regional heritage.

Its addition expands the company’s geographical reach and introduces a different style of European river journey.

TUI Elara Opens New Opportunities for Exploring Paris and Normandy

TUI Elara will provide passengers with a new way to discover the cultural and historical attractions of northern France.

The journey will take travellers through Paris, where the Seine passes internationally recognised landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Musée d’Orsay.

Beyond the French capital, the itinerary introduces Vernon, a picturesque riverside town closely associated with the nearby home and gardens of Claude Monet.

Passengers will also have opportunities to discover Rouen, Normandy’s historic capital, before reaching Le Havre near the point where the Seine enters the English Channel.

Normandy’s Historic Towns and Coastal Heritage Take Centre Stage

The new Seine programme is designed to offer more than sightseeing in Paris. It will also provide access to destinations known for their artistic heritage, medieval architecture and important historical events.

Rouen stands out for its Gothic cathedral, traditional streets and connections with the history of Joan of Arc. Vernon offers a gateway to the landscapes that inspired some of France’s best-known Impressionist art.

Further along the river, Le Havre introduces a different side of Normandy through its maritime setting and distinctive urban character.

Optional TUI River Cruise Collections excursions will also provide opportunities to explore Normandy’s D-Day landing beaches.

TUI Elara Introduces a More Intimate River Cruise Experience

TUI Elara is scheduled to join the operator’s fleet in March 2027 before beginning its Seine programme the following year.

Measuring 110 metres in length, the vessel is shorter than the 135-metre ships that make up much of the company’s fleet. This makes it particularly suitable for the operational characteristics of the Seine.

The adults-only ship will accommodate 138 passengers in 70 cabins, placing it among the smaller vessels in TUI River Cruises’ European collection.

Its comparatively intimate scale is intended to support a relaxed onboard atmosphere while offering access to important cultural attractions along the river.

French Balcony Junior Suites Add Comfort to Seine Holidays

TUI Elara will introduce the company’s first French Balcony Junior Suites, expanding the accommodation choices available to passengers travelling through France.

Each suite will measure 19.5 square metres and include additional services such as nightly turndown and continental breakfast served in bed.

These features are designed to provide an enhanced accommodation experience while maintaining the comfortable and informal atmosphere associated with the operator’s river cruise holidays.

The vessel will also offer established dining and leisure facilities, giving passengers spaces to enjoy meals, admire the landscape and relax between visits to riverside towns and cultural landmarks.

Dining, Lounges and Open-Air Leisure Enhance the Journey

Passengers sailing aboard TUI Elara will find a selection of facilities intended to make time onboard an important part of the overall holiday.

Verdastro will serve as the vessel’s principal à la carte restaurant, while The Observatory will provide a dedicated lounge and bar. Both concepts are already familiar features across the company’s European river cruise fleet.

The Top Deck will offer sun loungers and a putting green, together with space for yoga, deck games and barbecues.

These facilities will allow travellers to enjoy a combination of relaxation and informal activities as the ship moves through the French countryside.

New Flight Options Strengthen Access to Seine River Cruises

The introduction of the Seine will also bring additional travel arrangements for passengers departing from the United Kingdom.

For the first time, TUI River Cruises customers will be able to use Air France flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle from selected UK airports, including Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh.

The programme will also include easyJet flight options from London Gatwick, Bristol, Glasgow and Newcastle.

These arrangements are intended to improve access to the French capital and make it easier for holidaymakers from different parts of Britain to begin their river cruise journeys.

Flight availability will depend on the selected itinerary and departure.

Portugal’s Douro Valley Remains a Key Part of the 2028 Programme

While the introduction of new ships and the Seine represents a major development, TUI River Cruises will continue operating established itineraries in other parts of Europe.

TUI Luzia, the company’s first purpose-built river cruise ship, will remain on Portugal’s Douro in summer 2028.

Its seven-night sailings will take travellers through a region celebrated for its vineyard landscapes, traditional riverside communities and long-established wine-making heritage.

Highlights will include Porto, the scenic Douro Valley and Peso da Régua, providing opportunities to experience northern Portugal’s distinctive culture and countryside.

Dedicated Solo Sailings Expand Options for Independent Travellers

Summer 2028 will also feature dedicated sailings designed for people who prefer to travel independently.

TUI Maya will operate solo-focused departures along the Danube, while TUI Skyla will offer similar experiences on the Rhine.

These journeys will provide options for passengers seeking the freedom of travelling alone while enjoying the organised structure of a river cruise holiday.

The programme forms part of the company’s broader effort to accommodate different traveller preferences, from shorter cultural escapes to longer journeys and dedicated solo travel experiences.

It also provides more choice within the operator’s established European river cruise network.

TUI Aria Moves to the Danube as Fleet Deployment Evolves

Another important development for summer 2028 involves TUI Aria, the largest vessel in the company’s fleet.

The ship will move to the Danube as part of the wider deployment changes, further increasing the range of river cruise accommodation available on this major European route.

Its relocation will accompany the introduction of TUI Velara, highlighting the importance of the Danube within the operator’s future programme.

Together with continued sailings along the Rhine, Moselle and other European waterways, these changes demonstrate how TUI River Cruises is redistributing fleet capacity to support a broader itinerary selection.

Summer 2028 Sailings Offer Holidays From Three to Fourteen Nights

The summer programme has been structured to serve passengers with different holiday lengths and travel priorities.

Shorter three- and four-night itineraries will provide opportunities for travellers seeking a brief river escape, while seven-night sailings will allow more time to explore regional attractions.

Longer journeys extending up to 14 nights will cater to passengers who want a more substantial river cruise experience.

With departures planned from March until October 2028, travellers will have a wide seasonal window to choose from, covering spring journeys, summer holidays and early autumn departures across several European river systems.

TUI River Cruises Introduces Summer 2028 Holidays From £1,749

The new programme includes a starting advertised price of £1,749 per person for the seven-night Danube Treasures itinerary aboard TUI Velara.

The quoted price is based on two adults sharing a Deck 1 Standard Cabin, with Full Board Plus included. It also incorporates flights from London Gatwick with TUI Airways.

The advertised amount is a starting price for the specified holiday arrangement rather than a fixed price for every sailing.

Actual holiday costs may vary depending on the departure date, cabin selection, flight arrangements and optional upgrades.

The full summer 2028 collection is scheduled to go on sale on Thursday, 15 October 2026.

River Cruise Expansion Reflects Growing Interest in Destination-Led Holidays

The scale of TUI River Cruises’ latest programme reflects its efforts to respond to customer interest in culturally rich holidays that combine transport, accommodation and sightseeing.

The operator’s research indicates that destinations are central to booking decisions, influencing the development of both its new vessels and itineraries.

The addition of the Seine also responds to interest in France’s historic waterways, while continued operations on the Douro, Rhine and Danube preserve access to established river cruise regions.

By combining new ships, different accommodation categories, regional experiences and solo travel departures, the company is positioning its fleet to serve a wider range of holiday preferences.

Summer 2028 Marks a Major New Chapter for European River Holidays

TUI River Cruises’ summer 2028 expansion represents a significant development in the company’s European river cruise offering, bringing together fleet investment, destination diversification and new onboard experiences.

The introduction of TUI Zora and TUI Velara will add purpose-built capacity on the Rhine and Danube, while TUI Elara’s Seine itineraries will give passengers access to Paris, Normandy and the cultural landmarks of northern France.

Continued Douro operations, dedicated solo departures and wider flight connections will further increase the range of journeys available.

With 10 ships, 43 itineraries and a planned 26% rise in capacity, the 2028 season will be the company’s largest announced summer programme to date, offering British travellers more ways to discover Europe’s rivers and the destinations along them.
