Visit County Durham is giving a powerful boost to the promotion of UK tourism by showcasing its rich heritage, culture and group travel opportunities. The destination has showcased its diverse tourism offerings at one of county’s leading group travel exhibitions, connecting with thousands of tour organisers, travel buyers and tourism professionals from across the country. At the Group Leisure & Travel Show in Milton Keynes, Visit County Durham worked with leading local attractions to promote its historic castles, world-class museums, cultural landmarks and spectacular live entertainment, inspiring future group tours, holidays and memorable visitor experiences.
The annual Group Leisure & Travel Show, hosted at MK Arena in Milton Keynes, brought together tourism destinations, attractions and industry representatives for a one-day event focused on developing new group travel opportunities and inspiring future tours, excursions and holidays.
To strengthen Durham’s presence at the exhibition, Visit County Durham joined forces with several prominent local attractions, including Raby Castle, Park and Gardens, Kynren, The Auckland Project, The Bowes Museum and Beamish, The Living Museum of the North. Together, they presented a comprehensive picture of the county’s tourism experiences and its appeal to organised travel groups.
The showcase highlighted County Durham’s rich mix of historic landmarks, internationally recognised museums, cultural attractions, landscaped gardens and large-scale live performances. It also demonstrated the destination’s ability to offer varied itineraries, combining heritage, entertainment, education and immersive experiences for visitors with different interests.
Michelle Gorman, managing director at Visit County Durham, said: “Group travel is an important part of our visitor economy, and events such as the Group Leisure & Travel Show give us a valuable opportunity to put Durham directly in front of the people planning the experiences and itineraries of tomorrow. What makes our offer particularly strong is the breadth of experiences we can bring together. By working alongside our partners, we can demonstrate that Durham is much more than a collection of individual attractions, it is a destination with stories, experiences and itineraries that can keep groups coming back. Collaboration is at the heart of a successful visitor economy. When we work together and connect our individual strengths, we create a much stronger collective offer for visitors and for the group travel market.”
The Auckland Project joined Visit County Durham at the event, demonstrating how collaboration between local tourism partners can strengthen the county’s appeal and create more engaging travel experiences for group visitors.
Arabella Lawler, Visitor Development Coordinator,The Auckland Project said: “It was fantastic to attend the event alongside Visit County Durham and our fellow partners, showcasing everything the county has to offer the group travel market. Events like this are a great opportunity to make new connections and inspire organisers to discover more of Durham. We know that we are stronger when we work together. By bringing our individual experiences and expertise together as a collective, we can create a much more compelling offer for visitors and group travel organisers. It’s that spirit of collaboration and partnership that really helps put Durham on the map.”
As group travel organisers seek new destinations and memorable experiences, the exhibition offered a valuable platform for Visit County Durham to establish fresh industry partnerships, reinforce existing relationships and highlight the county’s distinctive tourism appeal. The event also created opportunities to introduce travel buyers to Durham’s diverse attractions and encourage the development of new group tours and holiday itineraries.
Through continued collaboration with tourism businesses, heritage sites and visitor attractions across the region, Visit County Durham is working to create a more connected and accessible group travel experience. This coordinated approach helps tour operators explore the county’s offerings, plan attractive itineraries and introduce more visitors to Durham’s rich history, cultural experiences and tourism destinations.
